Biodiversity status Of concern
Subregion 2, 3, 4, (2.7), (2.2), (2.8)
Estimated extent1 Pre-clearing 4000 ha; Remnant 2021 4000 ha
Short description Forest or woodland fringing perennial watercourses and on associated alluvium
Structure code Woodland
Description Fringing woodland of Melaleuca leucadendra, Lophostemon grandiflorus, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Livistona rigida. Corymbia aparrerinja and Lysiphyllum cunninghamii occur on sandier levees and Eucalyptus microtheca occurs on finer textured lower alluvial terraces on lower reaches. Shrub understorey of Acacia spp. Occurs on alluvial deposits along spring fed perennial watercourses; alluvial soils. Riverine. (BVG1M: 22c).

Vegetation communities in this regional ecosystem include:
1.3.9a: Fringing closed forest including Melaleuca fluviatilis, Melaleuca leucadendra, Nauclea orientalis, Ficus racemosa, Livistona rigida, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Lophostemon grandiflorus. Occurs on alluvial deposits along major perennial watercourses and fringing large permanent waterholes. Riverine. (BVG1M: 22c).
1.3.9b: Fringing woodland of Melaleuca leucadendra, Lophostemon grandiflorus, Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Livistona rigida. Corymbia aparrerinja and Lysiphyllum cunninghamii occur on sandier levees and Eucalyptus microtheca occurs on finer textured lower alluvial terraces on lower reaches. Shrub understorey of Acacia spp. Occurs on alluvial deposits along perennial watercourses; alluvial soils. Riverine. (BVG1M: 22c).

Special values 1.3.9: Includes the only perennial watercourses in arid and semi-arid Queensland. Habitat for threatened species including purple-crowned fairy-wren Malurus coronatus. 1.3.9a: Includes the only perennial watercourses in arid and semi-arid Queensland. Habitat for threatened species including purple-crowned fairy-wren Malurus coronatus. 1.3.9b: Includes the only perennial watercourses in arid and semi-arid Queensland. Habitat for threatened species including purple-crowned fairy-wren Malurus coronatus.
Fire management guidelines SEASON: Wet season. INTENSITY: Low. INTERVAL: Fire return interval not relevant. INTERVAL_MIN: 100. INTERVAL_MAX: 100. STRATEGY: Allow fire to trickle into these communities only when necessary to reduce build up of palm / pandanus debris in order to protect against wildfire. This ecosystem requires only partial burns of each patch only when absolutely necessary, thus maximising fauna refugia. ISSUES: Does not tolerate frequent wildfires. Resilient to some burning, even occasional intense fires.
Comments 1.3.9: Survey urgently required to verify condition. Aquatic ecosystems poorly known but threatened by increasing human use. Other threatening processes include weed infestation and disturbance by feral pigs. 1.3.9a: Aquatic ecosystems poorly known but threatened by grazing and increasing human use. Other threatening processes include weed infestation and disturbance by feral pigs. 1.3.9b: Survey urgently required to verify condition. Aquatic ecosystems poorly known but threatened by increasing human use. Other threatening processes include weed infestation and disturbance by feral pigs.

1 Estimated extent is from version 13.1 pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystem mapping. Figures are rounded for simplicity. For more precise estimates, including breakdowns by tenure and other themes see remnant vegetation in Queensland.
